Comets win Homecoming, 19-14

Mason City scored the first 14 points at Charles City’s Homecoming football game. The Comets scored the rest. Charles City (3-1) beat the RiverHawks 19-14. All three of the Comet touchdowns came on big plays, starting with a senior receiver Keenan Wiley weaving through defenders for a 59-yard score. Senior kicker Jack Hanson nailed the extra point. Wiley then scored an 87-yard touchdown off quarterback senior Jordan Foster’s sideline pass. The extra point attempt failed and Mason City went into the half leading 14-13. N-P grad competes in Best Squad Competition

A 2021 Nashua-Plainfield grad is part of a five-man squad out to prove it’s the U.S. Army’s best this week. The U.S. Army Forces Command Best Squad Competition began at Fort Campbell, Ky., on Monday, Aug. 14. SPC. Chase Betsinger, the son of Lisa and SFC (retired) Doug Betsinger, is a member of the squad representing the Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC). Betsinger is an all source intelligence analyst with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Space Battalion, Fort Carson. In June, Betsinger won the SMDC’s Soldier of the Year award. N-P marching band preparing spooky show

Xylophones can be creepy. Two of them set up Wednesday morning behind Nashua-Plainfield Elementary School. When they started playing, they resurrected a 1980s nightmare. Ten staccato chimes — over and over — as teenagers walked with careful, smooth steps — sweat beads forming on foreheads — turning corners that are were not there. Bewitched. Chickasaw County Fair royalty crowned

Roughly five hours earlier, Tori Bearman made a little local history. She was the first competitor in the Big 4 Fair’s inaugural Turn and Burn racing event on Saturday. She tore into the fairgrounds’ dirt track by guiding a Polaris Ranger UTV through a course of poles. Then, after putting away her red racing helmet and pink-strapped goggles, she was crowned as the 2023 Chickasaw County Fair Queen. Elaina Rosonke was chosen as her alternate. The Big 4 Fair Board ran its first Turn and Burn racing event on Saturday, July 15, during the 4-H and FFA Achievement Show at the fairgrounds in Nashua. The races were timed obstacle courses for UTVs, ATVs and motorcycles. Pratt, Franzen honored by conference

Nashua-Plainfield junior Jalynn Pratt was named to the Top of Iowa-East all-conference second team. N-P sophomore Paige Franzen received honorable mention. Pratt batted .265 this season while driving in 11 runs and scoring 7. She hit 11 singles, five doubles and two triples. She led the team with nine stolen bases and a .952 fielding percentage as third baseman. Franzen had a .280 batting average and hit 10 singles and four doubles. She drove in 11 runs and scored 6. Huskies fall in 2nd round of baseball playoffs

A 6-run sixth inning was too much for Nashua-Plainfield to overcome Wednesday night against East Buchanan. The Buccaneers won 10-4 in the Class 1A Substate 3 District 5 second round game played at North Linn. The Bucs (13-9) will play North Linn (25-4) in the next round on Saturday, July 8. A tractor pull held Saturday, June 3, at the Big 4 Fairgrounds raised funds for Nashua causes. Handwritten signs around the grandstand announced that all donations would go to “Help Save The Cabin,” the Nashua Fireman Foundation, the Gateway to Northern Iowa Welcome Center, the Children’s Cancer Connection and the Big 4 Fair. Huskies beat Saints, 7-0

Nashua-Plainfield’s Dawson Glaser pitched seven shutout innings Wednesday to ice a 7-0 win against Saint Ansgar. Making his second start on the mound this season, Glaser struck out seven batters while walking none and scattering five hits. In his first outing on May 23, he pitched 6 1/3 innings and struck out 12 in N-P’s 5-3 win over Central Springs. N-P improved its record to 4-1. The Saints fell to 5-3.
