DNR news release Hunter Education Classroom courses are offered by knowledgeable and certified volunteer instructors and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers. Classroom courses are typically 12-15 hours in length and are held over 2 to 3 sessions (days). In order to receive certification, a student must attend all sessions and pass the final exam. City waiting for right time to raze CW bridge; seeking more grants

CHARLES CITY — As the city waits for the right conditions to tear down the crumbling Charley Western Bridge, it’s hunting for more money to build its replacement. The exact date for demolition is still unsettled, but will most likely be in July, said Charles City Administrator Steven T. Diers. The Cedar River’s level will be a key determining factor. Delay mowing of roadside ditches to protect ground nesting birds, pollinators

Iowa DNR news release Iowa law prohibits mowing roadside ditches each year between March 15 and July 15, to protect ground nesting birds and to prevent nest destruction. Roadside ditches, while not optimal habitat, can be the only grassy habitat available in certain areas of the state for ground nesting birds. As spring progresses, ground nesting birds, like eastern and western meadowlarks, Dickcissels, field and song sparrows, quail, gray partridge and pheasants, will use these marginal areas to incubate eggs and rear their young. The workshop will be held July 10-12 at Hickory Hills, southwest of La Porte City, and Aug. 1-3 at Clover Woods Camp and Retreat, northwest of Madrid. Iowa DNR news release Ordinarily, a slow moving vehicle at night in the Iowa countryside spotlighting deer, raccoons or coyotes would send Iowans to their phone, speed-dialing their local conservation officer, but in this case, it may be the officer doing the shining. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources annual spring spotlight survey is underway with Wildlife and Law Enforcement staff conducting nighttime counts of all furbearing animals, and white-tailed deer. County accepting applications for spring youth turkey hunt permits for Tosanak Recreation Area

MARBLE ROCK — Five youth permits will be drawn for the Spring Turkey Season at the Tosanak Recreation Area. Applications for the youth hunters will be due on, Sunday April 1, by 10 p.m. A public drawing will be held on Monday, April 2, at 8 a.m. at the Fossil & Prairie Center, 1227 215th St, Rockford. Iowa DNR news release Channel catfish move close to shore and are eager to bite in many lakes and the large reservoirs across Iowa. After eating light during the winter, channel catfish go on a feeding frenzy in early spring cleaning up small fish that died over the winter. Iowa DNR news release The Iowa Monarch Conservation Consortium has set a goal of acres devoted to monarch butterfly habitat in the state by 2038. “The consortium has worked collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan to expand habitat on our agricultural land, urban areas, roadsides, and other public land.
