4-H Harvest Party is Oct. 8

NASHUA — The 4-H program will be hosting a 4-H Family Harvest Party 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Borlaug Learning Center near Nashua. The party will include hayrides and a free meal. Members who attend the party will receive a $20 discount on the re-enrollment that night. New members who attend that night will receive free enrollment.   Computers and assistance will be available to help complete the enrollment process that night to receive all discounts. CC firefighters collecting donations for MDA today (Sept. 24)

CHARLES CITY — It’s a good day to grab that spare change from the top of your dresser as you head out this morning. The Charles City fire department is collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the intersection of Gilbert and Brantingham. They will be there until noon. It’s called Fill the Boot and this is the 16th year the Charles City department has been part of the nationwide fundraiser. Home art tour being offered Sept. 24 in Charles City 

Charles City has become known for its wide variety of public art, especially in Central Park and along the riverfront. However, a vast number of art treasures reside with private collections in town as well. On Sunday, Sept. 24, five Charles City homes will be opening their homes for public viewing of their private collections. CCFD responds to fire call at Joslin and Hulin Streets

The Charles City Fire Department responded to at emergency call at about 10 a.m. Sunday at a house at Joslin and Hulin Streets. The department responded with two trucks and no smoke or flame was obvious. Firefighters entered through the front door where they set up a large fan. By 9:15 a.m, they packed up the fan, put away equipment and departed. Firefighters said it was a cooking fire. No injuries or serious damage. Food safety certification class to be held Oct. 16 in Charles City

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Floyd County will be hosting a ServSafe® food safety certification class in Charles City on October 16, 2017. “Certification in ServSafe® meets the Iowa Food Code requirements to have a certified food protection manager in all establishments,” said Nancy Clark, class instructor and ISU Extension and Outreach Nutrition and Wellness Specialist. This eight-hour program aims to train food service professionals about food safety requirements and best practices to meet them.” According to Clark, the program is based on the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe® certification program and the Iowa Food Code. 28 tons of trash and more removed from Cedar River

A record 469 volunteers participated in year’s Project AWARE that cleaned trash out of the Cedar River beginning at the Minnesota state line and finishing at Howard’s Woods Recreation Area in Nashua.A summary by the organizers of the July 10-14 effort says 28 tons of trash was removed from the 55 miles of river. New pastor to begin in August at St. John Evangelical 

CHARLES CITY — St. John Evangelical Church has a new pastor. The Rev. Russ Leeper will begin in mid-August. According to the church’s website, Leeper has served congregations in Nebraska and Wisconsin. Before being called to Spooner, Wis., he was the pastor of Burke Lutheran Church in Madison, Wis., for nearly 10 years.  His wife, Susan, is a middle school math teacher. Here are some of the highlights thus far: ​The Mark Kuhn Family has reopened the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club which features a tennis court that resembles the famous Wimbledon.
