Chucktown Brewfest is back on Oct. 21; Iowa craft beer sampling, German food and fun on tap

Aquatic, forest and right-of-way continuing instruction course is Oct. 18

CHARLES CITY — Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Floyd County office will host an Aquatic, Forest and Right-of-Way Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The program provided by the ISU Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) can be seen at office locations across Iowa. The local attendance site for the Oct. 18 CIC is at NIACC, 203 Brantingham Street, Charles City. CC firefighters collecting donations for MDA today (Sept. 24)

CHARLES CITY — It’s a good day to grab that spare change from the top of your dresser as you head out this morning. The Charles City fire department is collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the intersection of Gilbert and Brantingham. They will be there until noon. It’s called Fill the Boot and this is the 16th year the Charles City department has been part of the nationwide fundraiser. Home art tour being offered Sept. 24 in Charles City 

Charles City has become known for its wide variety of public art, especially in Central Park and along the riverfront. However, a vast number of art treasures reside with private collections in town as well. On Sunday, Sept. 24, five Charles City homes will be opening their homes for public viewing of their private collections. CCFD responds to fire call at Joslin and Hulin Streets

The Charles City Fire Department responded to at emergency call at about 10 a.m. Sunday at a house at Joslin and Hulin Streets. The department responded with two trucks and no smoke or flame was obvious. Firefighters entered through the front door where they set up a large fan. By 9:15 a.m, they packed up the fan, put away equipment and departed. Firefighters said it was a cooking fire. No injuries or serious damage. New pastor to begin in August at St. John Evangelical 

CHARLES CITY — St. John Evangelical Church has a new pastor. The Rev. Russ Leeper will begin in mid-August. According to the church’s website, Leeper has served congregations in Nebraska and Wisconsin. Before being called to Spooner, Wis., he was the pastor of Burke Lutheran Church in Madison, Wis., for nearly 10 years.  His wife, Susan, is a middle school math teacher. CC Mayor: Charles City progress — Looking backward, looking forward

Here are some of the highlights thus far: ​The Mark Kuhn Family has reopened the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club which features a tennis court that resembles the famous Wimbledon. It has now been named, the “Alex J. Kuhn Court of Dreams” during a two day invitational at the court. CC murder suspect arrested in Chicago

Last night, the Chicago Police Department took Antoine Williams, age 36, into custody on a warrant for 1st degree murder issued from an incident which took place in Charles City on June 30 at 9:46 am in the 2100 block of Clarkview Drive, according to a Facebook post by the Charles City Police. The Chicago Police Department does not have any current charges of their own on the subject.  ” We would like to thank the public for their patience and assistance in the days following the incident,” the post says. McQuillen clock tower lifted into place

A new clock tower was lifted into place this morning in downtown Charles City.  Although not full, sidewalks facing McQuillen Place attracted spectators as a crane prepared for the big lift.  Early spectators got to watch an initial lift moving the tower from behind McQuillen to a staging point on the street. The crane was then repositioned for the final lift and the tower was in place before 9:30 a.m. Developer Charley Thompson, center in the black suit crosses Main Street to watch the final lift of the clocktower to the top of McQuillen Place. Police release name of man killed in CC

CHARLES CITY — Police have released the identity of the man killed June 30 in the 2100 block of Clarkview. Charles City Police officers responding to a report of shots fired at 9:46 p.m. found Nathaniel Fleming, 36, whose last residence address was Mason City. He was transported by ambulance to the Floyd County Medical Center and pronounced dead. An arrest warrant for Antoine Williams, 36, accuses him of  1st degree murder. Family to donate organs of CCHS freshman after ATV crash

CHARLES CITY — A vigil begins at 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Sunset Pond at 507 Sunset Place in memory of Logan Luft, who was terminally injured in an ATV accident on July 4. He has been declared brain dead and his family is donating his organs to save other lives. A boy who was beginning his high school career this fall has been declared brain dead after an ATV crash, according to an email sent out by the Charles City Community School District.
