Xylophones can be creepy.
Two of them set up Wednesday morning behind Nashua-Plainfield Elementary School. When they started playing, they resurrected a 1980s nightmare.
Ten staccato chimes — over and over — as teenagers walked with careful, smooth steps — sweat beads forming on foreheads — turning corners that are were not there. Bewitched.
One man loomed over it all, smacking a wood block with a drum stick. They were going perform one more time, said N-P band director Scott Stroud.
“And then we’ll get ice cream,” he said. Wednesdays are for ice cream in band camp.
The show they are preparing for the marching band season is called “Don’t Be Afraid.” The opening music is the “Halloween” movie main theme.
The second piece will be “Creep” by Radiohead, followed by “Ghostbusters.”
Band camp began on Monday and wraps up Thursday.
The Huskies band has around 40 members this year. They will perform the show at halftime of N-P home football games and in marching band competition.
“We are starting to sound and look good!” Stroud posted Wednesday on Facebook.
