Armed standoff in Maynard ends peacefully
On June 4, Fayette County Communications received a report of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Palace Rd and Hwy 3. It was reported that a silver pickup struck fixtures along the roadway and fled the scene at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was later located at a residence in the city of Maynard.
When deputies contacted the registered owner of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado —— he brandished a firearm while speaking with the deputies and refused to drop it, the deputies reported.During the hour long standoff that ensued, Walker discharged his firearm in attempt to have deputies fire upon him, said the Sheriff’s Office news release.
The standoff ended peacefully, and Walker was taken into custody and transported to the Fayette County Jail where he is charged with striking fixtures upon a highway, operating while under the influence, possession of a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, reckless use of firearm, interference with official acts and failure to maintain control. This case remains under investigation and more charges may be pending.

Driver cited after crash into stump
On June 4, 2023, at 4:42 a.m., the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a single vehicle accident in the town of Waucoma. It was determined that Juan Solis Mejia, 29, of West Union, was driving a 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT south bound when he lost control, ran up on a curb, and struck a tree stump. Mejia reported minor injuries and refused treatment. The Dodge is a total loss. Mejia was cited for failure to maintain control and failure to provide financial liability.
Waterloo man arrested for failing to appear in court
On June 2, 2023, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office arrested Brian Allen Heasley, 41, of Waterloo, on a Fayette County warrant for failure to appear on original charge of possession of marijuana-third or subsequent offense (aggravated misdemeanor). Heasley was transported to the Fayette County Jail and was held on a $2,500 cash only bond. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office.
UTV driver arrested on OWI charge
On June 3, 2023, at approximately 1:26 a.m., a Fayette County deputy initiated a traffic stop on a 2023 Gray Polaris Ranger for traffic infractions. The driver was determined to be intoxicated. Stryker Alexander Long, 20, of Elgin, was arrested and charged with first offense operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor). Long was transported to the Fayette County Jail.
