BLIZZARD NEWS: Road condition, business and more updates

Fareway closing at 6 p.m.

The Oelwein Fareway Store announced that it is closing at 6 p.m. because of the extreme weather.

The store is scheduled to be open until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Christmas Eve.

Travel not recommended, no towing

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office issued this statement at about 2 p.m.: “Travel is Not Recommended, due to limited visibility and road conditions. No Towing in Fayette County for safety reasons.

Leo’s closed tonight

Leo’s Italian Restaurant and Generations lounge announced this morning: “Due to the weather Leo’s will be closed this evening. Sorry for the inconvenience. Pick up orders for Christmas Eve can be picked up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve Day.”

Oelwein declares snow emergency

The city of Oelwein declared a snow emergency that began Wednesday and will last through noon Saturday. No on street parking. Vehicles must be moved from the street to comply with the city ordinance. Parking is available in the downtown north city lot.

National Weather Service Blizzard warning until Saturday morning

BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST SATURDAY...

* WHAT...Blizzard conditions. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
Wind chill values of 30 to 35 degrees below zero.

* WHERE...North central and northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota.

* WHEN...Winds gradually subside late tonight with improving
visibilities.

* IMPACTS...Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibilities and drift over roadways. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches possibly result in sporadic power outages.
The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute.
