Nashua daily briefing (Oct. 12

Good morning, Nashua area readers. It’s Thursday, Oct. 12. Happy National Farmers Day. Here’s what’s happening.

From the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released Tuesday, Oct. 11; Iowa farmers were able to harvest 29 percent of the soybean crop during the week ending October 9 to reach 55 percent complete, 9 days ahead of the average. Soybean condition rated 62 percent good to excellent. (Read the full report here.)

1. WEATHER — Today, there is a 20 % chance of isolated showers after 3 p.m. Clouds will increase throughout the day, and the high temp will be near 65. Breezy, with a north wind 7 to 12 mph becoming west 19 to 24 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 38. Breezy, with a west wind 8 to 16 mph. (Extended Forecast)

2. VOLLEYBALL — N-P improved its season record to 9-17 by winning two of three matches at the quad last night in Greene. The Huskies defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL 2-1 and North Butler 2-0. 3. CROSS COUNTRY — Nashua-Plainfield’s boys and girls teams will travel to Central Springs next Thursday, Oct. 20 for a Class 1A state qualifying meet that begins at 4 p.m.

The other teams that will be there are Belmond-Klemme, Bishop Garrigan, Algona, Central Springs, Clarksville, GTRA, Lake Mills, Manson Northwest Webster, Newman Catholic (Mason City), North Iowa (Buffalo Center), North Union, Northwood-Kensett, Riceville, Rockford, Saint Ansgar, St. Edmond (Fort Dodge), West Bend-Mallard, West Fork (Sheffield), and West Hancock (Britt). 4. GOV’T — N-P School district OKs contract changes on parental leave: The Nashua-Plainfield School Board on Monday approved NPEA and NPESP contract language changes regarding parental leave. Now school district employees who give birth will get up to 10 days of paid leave. Spouses or committed partners get up to five days. They must use the parental leave days within six weeks of the birth
