DNR news release The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is currently seeking public comment for the proposed rule making to implement Senate File 2389, passed by the Iowa Legislature in April 2018, allowing the DNR to establish rental fees at state parks and recreation areas. This change eliminates the need for the DNR to go through rule making under the authority of the Natural Resource Commission to establish, change and manage fees for camping, the use of rental facilities and other special privileges in state parks and recreation areas. Winter trout stocking begins Jan. 12

IDNR news release The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will release trout in seven locations this winter in areas that would not support them during warmer months. These winter stockings are a great place to take kids to catch their first fish. A family friendly event is paired with most of the stockings to help anglers have success and fun while fishing. The popular program is supported by the sales of the trout fee. Anglers need a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee to fish for or possess trout. Man run over while setting up deer blinds for veterans hunt

Iowa DNR JASPER COUNTY, Iowa – At approximately 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, November 10, a man was run over by a Polaris Ranger at the Reichelt Unit Area while setting up hunting blinds for a veteran’s deer hunt. James Whitson, 58, was run over when David Drew, 72, was backing the Polaris Ranger up to a trailer. Whitson was located between the trailer and the Ranger when Drew pushed the accelerator instead of the brake. Whitson was transported to Methodist Medical Center by helicopter and the extent of his injuries are unknown. Iowa DNR News Release The rusty patched bumble bee was designated as endangered by the federal government in 2017, after determining that the population had declined 87 percent in the last 20 years and is only present on 0.1 percent of its historic range. Named after the rusty patch centrally located on the backs of workers and males, but not queens, it once occupied grasslands and tallgrass prairies in the Upper Midwest and Northeast. 2017 Pheasant harvest tops 220,000, 2018 nesting forecast is mixed

IOWA DNR An estimated 55,000 hunters harvested more than 221,000 roosters in Iowa last fall; a slight decline from 245,000 harvested in 2016. Hunters reported good success across the entire northwest quarter of Iowa. An early look at the 2018 pheasant forecast begins with nesting success which is likely a mixed bag. Parts of southern Iowa are dry while northern Iowa has been inundated with rain. Up to 10,000 gallons of manure spill into Walnut Creek

RIDGEWAY, Iowa – The DNR on Wednesday announced it is investigating a manure spill about three miles north of Ridgeway in Winneshiek County. An estimated 5,000 to 10,000 gallons of manure reached the headwaters of Walnut Creek after a hose came apart during manure application, the news release said. “The spill occurred on the Kevin Moellers cattle confinement about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Moellers reported it to DNR at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday,” the release said. Hunters bag 11,700 turkeys during 2018 spring season

News Release Turkey hunters reported harvesting 11,700 Iowa birds this spring, which is 100 birds fewer than were harvested in 2017. Click here for a breakdown by county. Iowa’s spring turkey seasons began April 7 with the youth season and ended on May 20. Hunters purchased nearly 50,000 spring turkey tags. In Chickasaw County, three turkeys were harvested in the fall of 2017 and 105 this spring. In Floyd County, 12 were harvested in the fall, 173 this spring. Iowa Department of Natural Resources news release Iowa’s 2018 reported spring turkey harvest is approaching 9,300 birds. Last year, hunters reported nearly 11,800 turkeys. Iowa’s spring turkey hunting season ends May 20. Annual spring night population survey of deer, skunks, badgers, opossum, red fox, coyotes and other furbearers is wrapping up. The data is used as one factor to estimate Iowa’s deer population and is important for guiding management decisions on furbearers. The survey began in the late 1970s.
