N-P Post AM Update (Aug. 24): Heat forces sports to adjust

Good morning, it’s Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023.

The dangerous heat and humidity persist across the region into Thursday. Take precautions to protect yourself, family and pets from the extreme heat. Relief comes this weekend with much cooler and less humid air. Highs for Saturday and Sunday will drop back into the upper 70s to around 80. -NWS

Today — Sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 107. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph.

Tonight — Partly cloudy, with a low around 71. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph becoming northeast after midnight. A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 a.m.

Friday — A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Northeast wind 5 to 9 mph becoming northwest in the morning.

N-P sports schedule tweaked in the heat

As dangerous heat continues in the area, tonight’s N-P varsity volleyball game at Rockford has been moved up to 6:30 p.m. and the JV match is canceled.

The Huskies football team has been practicing either in the morning or evening this week to avoid the worst of the heat and humidity. N-P will travel to Postville for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
