The state hopes to extend the incarceration of a former Dunkerton man serving prison time after being convicted in 2018 of sex crimes in Howard and Chickasaw Counties.
Taylor William Jurgensen, 23, was scheduled for release on May 19 from the Newton Correctional Facility. On May 16, Chickasaw County District Judge Alan Heavans ruled that there is probable cause to believe Jurgensen is a sexually violent predator. He was ordered held in a state facility capabled of evaluating him prior to trial.
The non-jury trial to decide whether to civilly commit Jurgensen as a sexually violent predator is scheduled for July 28 in Chickasaw County District Court.
Jurgensen was convicted in Chickasaw County on Feb.13, 2018, of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse in a Fredericksburg park on May 27, 2017. He was convicted in Howard County on Aug. 28, 2018 of third-degree sexual abuse in April 2017. His victims were 12-to-13-year-old females. He pleaded guilty in both cases as part of negotiated agreements with prosecution.
