3 Arlington residents arrested on drug charges
On Thursday, March 16, about 5:30 a.m., a Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of 90th Street and Highway 187, Arlington, and arrested James Alfred Cornwell, 40, of Arlington, on charges of driving while license suspended and no proof of financial liability, both simple misdemeanors. The West Union Police Department/Drug Canine Unit assisted and canine indicated on suspect vehicle. During the execution of a subsequent search warrant authorities seized crystalized substances, marijuana, paraphernalia, and US currency.

Then on March 19, the Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol executed another search warrant at 962 Upper St. Arlington, and seized crystalized substances, wax, paraphernalia, ammunition and US Currency. Cornwell was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance-third offense and gathering where methamphetamine is used, all D Felonies.
Cornwell was additionally charged with child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Rodney Dean Cornwell, 58, of Arlington, was arrested on the Class D felonies of third-offense possession of methamphetamine and gathering where methamphetamine is used, as well as aggravated misdemeanor child endangerment and simple misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Linda Jean Cornwell, 36 of Arlington, was arrested and charged with first-offense possession of marijuana (serious misdemeanor) and child endangerment (aggravated misdemeanor).

All individuals were taken into custody and transported to Fayette County Jail.

Sunday, March 19
At 8:03 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car vs. deer accident on Hwy 18 east of Ironwood Road. The driver of a 2018 Volkswagen, Allison C. Marquette, of Hamilton, Indiana, was traveling west when a deer entered onto the roadway and the driver was unable to get stopped. The vehicle sustained an estimated $9,000 in damage and no one was injured in the accident.
At 1:15 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office arrested Edward Jacob Schmitt, 43 of St. Lucas, on a Fayette County arrest warrant for harassment in the 2nd degree. Schmitt was taken into custody and transported to Fayette County Jail, where he was held on $1000 cash/surety bond.

Saturday, March 18
At 10:30 p.m., the Sherriff’s Office took a report of a car deer accident near in the 13000 Block of Highway 18. Tina Marie Opitz, 47, of Arlington, was travelling westbound on Highway 18 when a deer came into the roadway striking her vehicle. Damage to the 2010 Chevy Impala was estimated at $3,000. No injuries were reported.
