Decorah blanks Charles City

CHARLES CITY — Decorah began Charles City’s Homecoming game with a bang. The Vikings’ first offensive play was an inside run that broke for more than 50 yards. Comet defender Jeremiah Chapman made a touchdown-saving tackle inside the 5-yard line.

Three plays later, Decorah’s senior quarterback Briggs Duwe scampered to the left the touchdown.

As it turns out, that was the game-winning score. The Vikings went on to shutout the Comets in their 49-0 win. Decorah is 5-0 for the season. Charles City is 0-3.

The Comets were poised to tie the game at 7 when Mario Hoefer hauled in a deep pass from Comets quarterback Alex Staudt. The Comets had a first and goal on the 1 yard line, when they fumbled into the endzone.

Decorah opened the second quarter with its passing game breaking through the Comet defense, setting up another touchdown plunge. Decorah led 14-0.

Another long completion, this time to Ian Collins, got the Comets to the Decorah 27, but the drive stalled at the 17.

Decorah added its third score of the half, a 2-yard touchdown run with three seconds left in the half. The Vikings waltzed into halftime with a 21-0 lead and never looked back, eventually going home with a 49-0 victory.
