CHARLES CITY — Ok all you amateur detectives … how well do you know your hometown?
Take the Hometown Scavenger Hunt challenge in October and test your knowledge of Charles City as well as your ability to figure out the clues for a chance to win prize money … and have some fun in the process. Presented by the Design Committee of Community Revitalization, this event will serve as a fundraiser to benefit downtown beautification efforts in Charles City. The Scavenger Hunt will take place October 8-19th, with the winners to be announced on October 21st at a reception at the Floyd County Historical Museum.
“This is a great opportunity to do something fun with friends or as a family, at any time that is convenient for you during that 12-day period,” said event co-organizer Christopher Anthony. “As long as you turn in all 10 answers by 6 p.m. on Oct. 19th, you will be included in the prize drawings.”
“In addition, you will be helping support efforts to keep beautifying and improving our downtown,” added fellow co-organizer Steve Schiller.
The Design Committee has spearheaded projects such as the Main Street flower pots, street banners, recreational trail, community welcome signs, refurbishing of the vintage street light poles, overseeing the Adopt-A-Lot cleaning of the downtown parking lots as well as the beautification of the parking lot planters. The Committee has also been involved with making sure the community has holiday decorations and partners with the City to administer the Façade Improvement Grant program each year.
Entry fee for the contest is $10 per person and all you need is a Smart phone with a camera in it and your wits! Sign up to participate beginning Oct. 8th at the Community Revitalization office at 401 North Main St. to receive your first of 10 clues to different locations around Charles City. Many of them have historical significance in the community. As you figure out each clue, take a picture of it on your Smart phone and text it to a special number you will be provided. Once your photo has been verified, you will be texted the next clue. Submit all 10 correct answers for a chance at the prize money drawing. First place will receive $50, while second place will double their entry fee and receive $20. Third place will earn back their $10 entry fee.
Winners will be announced at 4 p.m. on Oct. 21st at a reception at the Floyd County Historical Museum, 500 Gilbert St., which will be open with free admission from 3:30-5:30 p.m. that day. This is a great opportunity to check out the wonderful exhibits, including the new 50th anniversary tornado display.
