CHARLES CITY — No definitive date has been set for the demolition of the Charley Western Trailway Bridge as the city awaits an answer from the Army Corps of Engineers.
“We need to do some additional prep work now and have the area inspected for endangered wood turtles,” City Administrator Steve Diers said Tuesday. “We have a firm lined up to do that inspection but we are also waiting on comments from the Army Corp of Engineers to see if they have any wildlife inspection requirements before we move forward.”
If the inspection turns up evidence indicating the bridge area is wood turtle habitat, that doesn’t mean no bridge demolition. The city will need just need to take steps to protect the habitat during the demolition.
