CHARLES CITY — A new season for the Charles City Shining Stars is right around the corner and registration is open.
The Stars are children in grades 2-6. They learn cheer, dance and stunts from AACCA certified coach Marla Rima, who is also a high school cheer coach and a licensed teacher.
“Team members will learn cheer, dance and stunt techniques,” Rima said in a flier distributed in March at the Charles City School District’s Community Connections Night. She added that it’s for “serious students only.”
The objective is to “develop cheer and performance skills and prepare for public performances in June, July and October,” she said. “Students need to be highly motivated, ready to work hard and follow directions. Attendance is mandatory for stunting positions.”
Student must be able to walk in the Charles City Fourth of July Parade.
Practices are Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning May 8 and concluding June 28 at the First Congregational Church/United Church of Christ, 502 N. Jackson St., Charles City.
Performances will be:
- 5:45-8:30p.m. June 24 at the SportsPlex in Waterloo during a Cedar Valley CourtKings professional minor basketball game.
- 11 a.m. at the July Kids Day Celebration. The date is yet to be determined.
- The Fourth of July Parade in Charles City, and
- Oct. 23 at the Charles City Cheer invitational.
The cost is $50 and includes a cheer uniform (a top and skirt) and regulation pink pom poms. Optional cheer shoes are available for $25.
Registration forms are available at Charles City Schools.
