Nashua woman pleads guilty to pantry burglary

A Nashua woman arrested last fall for burglarizing the Nashua Area Food Pantry has pleaded guilty in Chickasaw Count District Court and was sentenced to probation. Desteney Dawn Olson, 42, reached an agreement with prosecution to plead guilty to third-degree burglary (Class D felony). A misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree criminal mischief was dismissed. She was placed on two years of probation on a suspended prison sentence of up to 5 years and a suspended $1,025 fine plus $153.73 surcharge. Wednesday morning fire damages Oelwein house

An Oelwein house was damaged by fire Wednesday morning. According to a news release, at 7:11 a.m., Feb. 22, 2023,the Oelwein Fire and Police Departments responded to a report of a house fire at a 501 5th Ave SE. Upon arrival, the smoke was seen coming from the residence with flames visible in the interior. Fire crews were able to suppress the fire with minimal structural damage. The preliminary investigation suggests an electrical failure could potentially be the cause. The Oelwein Departments were assisted by Mercy One Ambulance and crews from Alliant Energy. Oelwein FD fights second house fire within 24 hours

Oelwein firefighters were called back to action Monday (Feb. 13) to a second house fire within 24 hours. The 1 1/2 story house at 632 5th Ave. SW was destroyed by the fire, but no injuries were reported. The home was unoccupied, according to Oelwein Police. A Hawkeye woman accused of attacking her husband with swords had her first appearance in Fayette County District Court on Thursday. Kim Renee Cannon, 58, is charged with attempted murder. Magistrate Judge David Hansen set her bail at $25,000 cash or surety. If she makes bail, she must be supervised by Pretrial Services. Hanson also appointed attorney Nathan Moonen, of Ossian, to represent her at state expense and issued a no contact order to protect Cannon’s husband, who was transported to a La Crosse, Wis., hospital with life-threatening injuries to his face and head. A Hawkeye woman accused of injuring her husband with swords is facing an attempted murder charge. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office took a 911 call at 8:29 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, reporting a domestic assault in progress at a residence on P Avenue in rural Hawkeye, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the residence where they found Cannon and then a 70-year-old man with severe lacerations to his face and back of his head, according to the criminal complaint. Jury selected in stray voltage civil trial

A jury of nine people has been selected for the Vagts Dairy stray voltage trial. Civil trials call eight jurors and one alternative juror. On Tuesday, eight men and one woman were selected. Four of the jurors are retirees. One is listed as a laborer and another as a farmer. The others work in the medical and transportation fields. The trial didn’t return to session on Thursday because of the winter storm. Something was seriously wrong in the herd at Vagts Dairy. Milk production and health problems emerged in the late 2010’s in the 500-cow Holstein herd. Cows eventually were not responding to veterinarian treatments, and many had to be shot or were sold, the West Union dairy farm owners say. SUV crosses centerline, causes crash outside Fairbank

The collision of an SUV and a pickup northeast of Fairbank seriously injured their occupants on Sunday. At 10:42 a.m., Jan. 15, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a two-vehicle accident on Y Ave. south of 40th Street.  A 2016 Chevy Equinox operated by Isaac Buzynksi, 21, of Fairbank crossed the center line and collided with a 2000 Chevy S10 pickup operated by Eric Sterba, 50, of Sumner, says a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. N-P School Board asking voters to OK financing plan for sports complex

The Nashua-Plainfield school district plans to finance construction of a baseball and softball complex in Plainfield one of two ways, neither of which affects property taxes. The Board of Education at its regular meeting on Monday approved resolutions to make either possible. Regardless of the way the debt is incurred, the district will use sales tax revenue from the state to pay it off. Shot clock fire in West Fork means N-P gets home games on Friday

Turns out Nashua-Plainfield will be playing basketball at home on Friday. The boys and girls varsity squads had been scheduled to travel, but West Fork suffered a fire in a shot clock. After contacting N-P Activities Director Suzy Turner on Tuesday about the broken shot clock, West Fork confirmed on Thursday that it could not host the games and asked to flip-flop the schedule. 2nd drug warrant executed at same Maynard residence in 3 months

Fayette County authorities arrested two people after executing a search warrant at a Maynard home on Dec. 30. This was the second warrant regarding illegal drugs at the home withing three months, according to a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Crash on Christmas Eve near Fayette

No injuries were reported when a pickup fell into a road ditch near Fayette on Christmas Eve. At 11:44 a.m., the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a single vehicle accident on 150th St. just west of Fayette. According to deputies, a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by Zachary Bruns, 26, of Fayette was traveling west bound when he lost control due to the road conditions. The vehicle went into the north ditch landing on its side. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was towed from the scene. This accident remains under investigation.
